The End of My Youth

Yup, I'm done with Harry. The affair is over. Well, I mean sure, we'll have the memories, we can look back at the glory days and laugh, maybe even cry a little... but never again will I meet the pages of a crisp, new (HP) book with wide-eyed joy, wondrous hope, nervous excitement. Never again will I anxiously race to the finish with that feeling of conflict- should I draw it out, make it last as long as possible? But how can I? (Never again will I kiss you, never again will I want to... neverrrrr...sorry. Had to. Oh Kelly Clarkson. How mind-sticky thou songs are.)

Sonia and I have both completed and de-boned book 7, so it's time to start the autopsy...

[I'll probably be editing this all week, (or maybe all of my life) as I remember what irked me and what I loved. I'll try to be organised and not ramble, but you know that's hard for me. Just look at this intro. But can you blame me?]

A Lover's Farewell: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Characters: The Foul, the Forgiven and the Forgotten.

First off, everyone give a big HOORAH to house-elves. (Uh except Winky. She was missing from this book, did she die? I forget, I try to block #5&6 from memory.) Some people find Dobby irrirating, mostly because they can't separate movie from book... he has always been way cuter in the books. But if you did hate him, you should love him because he jumped in front of a knife for Harry and also teleported everyone out of some dungeon. If you are on Voldie's side, then proceed with the hating. Kreacher was amazing, being all Jamie-Oliver-meets-Les-Mis and cooking and Vive La Revolution!ing. I adore him.

My biggest problem with everyone else was that there wasn't enough planting. She used to be so good and planting character hints along the way and then at the end there was a nice big moment of OOH and everything nicely fell into place very cleverly. Like, Quirrel isn't scared he's posessed, Sirius is the dog that's been following Harry around... in this one, it was more like everyone had a paragraph to explain themselves then had to bugger off.

Take Snape, who had an entire chapter to explain-away his badness. In a move that I completely expected after the last book but Adelle refused to believe, he proves that he was not evil, just sacrificing his soul for someone a little bit purer's. But for all that, he could have been a little bit more pro-active. You know, have a little more screen time earlier in the book.

You have characters like Percy running in with no warning, who all just happen to know the super-secret passageway and want to join the good fight... which is all very well for guys like Oliver Wood who was never a traitor-face, but really Perce, it would be nice if some sort of remorse had been seen earlier. Lupin could have repaired relations a bit better too.

And then, you get endless amounts of time spent on new characters like Luna's father -- why?! Why why why? And he came off so horribly, JK could have spent less time on him. Also, the Harry I know would have hung it all and run off to Luna's rescue when he had heard that she'd been trapped, not just hang out in his stupid tent being moody until someone captured him and oh-lucky he ends up in the same prison as Luna and everyone else that's ever been of some vague importance.

Rar rar rar.

Ginny, still don't believe that you are remotely cool and or sexy. You will always be a whiney little carrot in my eyes. (They should have cast Anne and Gilbert -- that, I would have believed. A red head and a brunette, nicely done. And Anne would totally have been the type to go writing off to some journal and get stuck in a cave killing chickens and be sooo humiliated that Gilbert had to save her.)

And poor poor Draco was completely shafted- what is the point of Dumbledore dying and Snape giving up his soul if Draco doesn't even pitch in?? What a tool.

Point being, there was a very shallow redemption for most characters, or else they were just pure evil (read: Voldie, Bellatrix (whom I adore)), or else they had waaay too much time being not very funny or useful (ie Luna's dad and Harry).

Dumbledore was kinda rude, esp for a dead guy.

But Mrs Weasley swore, that was great.

La Cod-ette's guide on Super Duper Coolness

So yea. I'm really cool. At 6:30 am, still drunk, I joined the ranks of millions of adolescents for the new Harry Potter book. Luckily, I did it Westlife style. For those of you that don't know (er, anyone other than Adelle and I), Westlife style is the method by which one intends to queue very nobly from the back, but ends up arriving at the door nearest the front of the queue (in this case, I thought I was getting coffee) and cuts 3/4 of it, including the millions that got there at 4am (??!!)...so woo hoo? Whatever, you know you wish you were me.

See y'all in approx 6 hours.
